Nhlapho eager for Wits impact

The 24-year-old, who joined Wits from Jomo Cosmos in July, played both of the Students' previous two matches against AmaZulu and Ajax Cape Town.

Nevertheless, he faces a battle for coach Gavin Hunt's continal favour from established midfielders such as Tinashe Nengomasha, Matthew Pattison, Sandile Sibande, Miguel Timm and Papy Faty.

"All these names are great players, but every player has to be equal to the task at hand," Nhlapho tells KickOff.com.

"I think being focused and always willing to work hard is my weapon but we are not here to compete amongst each other but to pull through as a unit and achieve great things together and leave a legacy.

"I have set big goals for myself too. I want at least 20 starts, more than seven goals and some silverware too."

Nhlapho, a stand-out performer for Ezenkosi, explained how his move came about.

"Gavin had a list of players that he wanted as he was moving to Wits and I happened to be on that list. I attended a trial and was signed," Nhlapho says.

"I also wanted to move because I couldn’t spend another season in the NFD.

"When I went down (from the PSL) with Cosmos two seasons ago, it is not that I didn’t have clubs that wanted me, but I made a promise with Bra J (Jomo Sono) that I would help the team return to the PSL. That didn’t materialise and so I had to move."

The Clever Boys next face fellow high-flyers Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday, with Nhlapho determined to impress at Loftus Stadium.

"We really have a great coach in Gavin. He plans well and I think he already knows what he wants from us in that game," Nhlapo says.

"His tactics will help us but the job depends on us as players. Determination and hard work will win it for us, that I’m sure of."
