More tributes for Meyiwa

The Bucs goalkeeper was fatally shot last Sunday in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg, with police since confirming the arrest and court appearance of a suspect.

“It is with great sadness that we have learnt of the tragic passing of Senzo Meyiwa, who lost his life in a senseless incident and at a young age. On behalf of all us at The FA, we offer our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to you and all at the South African Football Association and, most importantly, to his family and friends. Our thoughts are with you at this difficult time,” said Greg Dyke, chairman of the English FA.

The Liberia Football Association (LFA) believes his death is a blow to the global football family.

“The president and executive committee of the Liberia Football Association (LFA) express their deepest condolences to you and the football family of South Africa for the loss of goalkeeper and captain Senzo Meyiwa, who was shot by unknown men. His death is not only a blow to South Africa, but also the entire football family of the world including Liberia. Please extend the LFA's condolences to the bereaved family and the people of South Africa,” said B. Alphonso Armah, general secretary of the LFA.

Premier Soccer League club Moroka Swallows said Meyiwa made his mark in South African football.

“Kindly receive our condolences and an expression of our heartfelt sympathy over the loss of your beloved son, husband, father and player who is one of those who changed the complexion of the football fraternity in this country. In our minds there is no doubt that his contribution to football, especiallly through Orlando Pirates Football Club and Bafana Bafana will always be remembered. On behalf of all at Moroka Swallows we share in your grief and pray that you remain strong durng this painful episode in your life,” said Sipho Xulu, a director at Swallows.
