Malajila seals Maritzburg fightback

It took only 14 minutes for the first bit of drama in this match as Bucs midfielder Thandani Ntshumayelo, called up to the Bafana Bafana squad yesterday, had to go off injured. He was replaced by Manti Moholo.

Despite the match starting rather slowly, it kicked into gear in the 18th minute when Tlou Segolela headed home a Happy Jele cross.

Bucs came close again when Khetho Masuku fired in a shot straight at Shuaib Walters, before Orlando Smeekes and Delron Buckley forced Senzo Meyiwa into saves.

Ndumiso Mabena wasted a good chance early in the second half when he shot to close to Walters, while Jele also missed a great chance to increase the lead.

And it proved costly when Heinrich Isaacks pounced on 58th minutes to fire in an equaliser for Maritzburg.

However, just two minutes later Bucs were back in front when Segolela found Masuku, who placed his shot past the goalie.

But then the drama…

Ryan de Jongh equalised for the visitors with four minutes, before Zimbabwean striker Malajila delivered the killer blow as he found the net in referee’s optional time.

The result sees Pirates finish a disappointing League campaign third, while Maritzburg end in 11th place.
