Fadlu defends Downs-bound Ndlovu

KickOff.com last week revealed Maritzburg had reached an agreement with Sundowns for the transfer of Ndlovu to the Brazilians at the end of the campaign.

With Ndlovu yet to showcase the ability that saw him named the PSL's Young Player of the Season and Midfielder of the Season in 2017/18, question marks have been raised over his motivation levels.

Davids, though, expects the 22-year-old, who received a two-game ban for his dismissal against Kaizer Chiefs in mid-August, to reassert his pedigree after the FIFA international break.

"His timing of the red card was really unfortunate because he missed five-and-a-half weeks of football," Davids said after his side drew 0-0 with Cape Town City at Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday.

"Now to play two games in one week it's really tough after not playing competitive games. Friendly matches are one thing, but playing in the PSL is another. The AmaZulu game [last week Tuesday] was also really intense, really physical.

"For him to get to into a match rhythm, these two games will definitely help him. Now there is a two-week break, we'll definitely look to get this rhythm of playing back into his stride, that will help him."

The Team of Choice finished a best-ever fourth in the league last term and reached a maiden cup final where they lost to Free State Stars in the Nedbank Cup decider.

This campaign they have only scored twice and conceded five times in eight matches in all competitions, as they currently sit in 13th place on the Absa Premiership table.

However, club captain and reigning PSL defender of the Season Siyanda Xulu is drawing encouragement from keeping consecutive clean sheets against Usuthu and City.

"It's all about the team, we are doing it [collecting clean sheets] as a unit," said Xulu, who is in the Bafana Bafana squad to face Seychelles in back-to-back 2019 AFCON qualifiers on Saturday and Tuesday.

"We are not satisfied. One part that is positive is that we have kept clean sheets but in going forward we need to be aggressive when it comes to the final third. I think it is something that we need to work on as a team."

Maritzburg on Monday were drawn to host Highlands Park in the Telkom Knockout last-16.

United's next league assignment is a trip to sixth-placed Polokwane City on October 27 at New Peter Mokaba Stadium.
