Maritzburg United again turn to Davids

The sudden departure of Roger de Sa means Davids has now been handed his fourth spell as caretaker coach at the Team of Choice over the last 18 months and will be assisted by his younger brother Mahier in a rare family partnership of coaches in command.

A decision about the way forward in terms of a permanent replacement for De Sa will then be looked into at the end of the campaign, despite the fact the club has already received applications from agents representing various coaches.

Last season, Davids twice served in a similar capacity as caretaker coach, firstly stepping up in September 2015 when Mandla Ncikazi failed to get going quick enough to hold on to his first head coaching job in the PSL.

Clive Barker was then appointed as Maritzburg coach but the veteran gaffer couldn’t get the team out of the mud and was gone within two months.

Davids was given brief control of the team for the second time and oversaw the game against Platinum Stars.

Then came Ernst Middendorp for his third spell with the club at the beginning of 2016, but was gone by November and the club again called on Davids.

The 35-year-old then took charge until the end of the year, before making way when Roger de Sa arrived.

And now with De Sa gone after just two months, Davids is being called upon for yet another feel of the hot seat. Maritzburg’s next game is on April 1 against Ajax Cape Town at home.
