LvG bitter with Rio criticism

Premiership

The former England centre-back feels there was no fight from the United players after they whimpered to a 2-0 first leg Europa League Last 16 defeat to Premier League rivals Liverpool, yet when asked for a response, Van Gaal’s fuse blew.

“I want to give a remark if it is important what Rio Ferdinand is giving,” he said.

"You don't give your opinion and you give Rio Ferdinand's opinion. Very strong of you.

"You have used another person to answer the question."

Despite the loss, Van Gaal feels his side are still in the tie, despite the fact that they have a mountain to climb in the second leg.

"You have to believe in everything, you have to believe we can create an atmosphere that Liverpool have done here at Anfield and then everything is possible," he said.

"Of course it is right, we did not create enough chances, I cannot deny that. I don't think that we were very creative, but it was also the defence of Liverpool, and you can give the greatest credit to Liverpool.

"We have to improve a lot to score goals though, we know. I have seen that we did not cope with the high pressure of Liverpool, we could not cope and that created a great atmosphere in the stadium."

The second leg at Old Trafford takes place next Thursday, before which United take on West Ham in their FA Cup quarter-final on Sunday.
