Sundowns rubbish R900m sponsor talk

Mamelodi Sundowns have poured cold water on outlandish reports claiming the club has agreed to a record-breaking sponsorship with Ferrari.

The 2019/20 domestic treble-winners have taken their game to new heights with an unbeaten run in the DStv Premiership and CAF Champions League this season as they cement their tag as favourites for both titles.

While their on-field success will naturally attract new sponsorship opportunities, speculation has been rife on social media regarding rumours of a staggering $62-million (R900m) six-year deal with the Italian luxury sports car manufacturer.

But no talks between Masandawana and Ferrari have taken place, according to a club official who has commented to this website under the condition of anonymity.

"No, it's an absolute joke, you could buy most of the teams in the league with that kind of money, it's not true," the official tells

With the inflated figures floating around and being shared widely online, the biggest sponsorship deals in South African football have been under R100-million annually with Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates the biggest beneficiaries.

Meanwhile, the average amount from their title sponsor for a top-flight club in South Africa is around R10-million per year.
