Downs new man in contention for top award

Ethiopian forward Abubeker Nasir Ahmed could complete his return to Mamelodi Sundowns with yet another scorer’s award.

Nasir has returned to Sundowns for pre-season after he was signed during the January transfer window and then loaned back to Ethiopian Coffee to complete the season in the BetKing Ethiopian Premier League.

While back on loan at Coffee, the lanky forward has continued tormenting opposition just like he did in the previous season when he scored 29 goals and was named the Best Young Player and Most Valuable Player.

His goal count in the ongoing Ethiopian Premier League has elevated him to joint top scorer with a game to spare.

Nasir made his last appearance for Coffee in the 1-0 defeat to Arba Menche on Friday before packing up and heading to Johannesburg where he will join the champions at their Chloorkop base as preparations start for the new season.

He didn’t feature in the 3-0 defeat to Fasil Kenema on Monday.

Though he missed out on games while on trials earlier in the year and won’t play again this season, Nasir has been able to rise to the top of the scoring charts with 14 goals.

Also on 14 goals is Ghana striker Richmond Adongo of Addis Ababa Ketema and Yigezu Bogale of Sidama Coffee.

On 13 goals is former BidVest Wits and University of Pretoria forward Getaneh Kebede of Wolkite Kenema.

The Ethiopian Premier League concludes on Friday with Saint George and Fasil Kenema in contention for the title.

Should none of those within reach of overtaking in their respective clubs’ last matches, Nasir will end the season as the top scorer again in Ethiopia by sharing the prize this time.

The 22-year-old has already been backed by fellow countryman Fikru Tefera to make an impact in the DStv Premiership.

Tefera played for Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United and Bidvest Wits amongst a host of teams in domestic football and is aware of what it will take for Nasir to succeed in the PSL.
