iKapa derby key battles

 Benni McCarthy v Muhsin Ertugral

The battle will definitely start on the touchline with two coaches who are usually animated. McCarthy got the better of Stanley Menzo in the first half of the season, but this time he’ll come up against a coach who knows South African football very well. Ertugral is trying to bring back confidence into the Ajax side and the 3-1 victory over Platinum Stars last week would have certainly given the players the boost they needed. The Turk is a good planner, so he’ll have to find a way to get through McCarthy’s strong defence which has conceded just two goals in the last five league matches.

Robyn Johannes v Tendai Ndoro

Ndoro bagged a goal on debut in the victory over Dikwena and would no doubt be itching to get on the score sheet on derby day. The Zimbabwean marksman now has the challenge of trying to beat a defender who has been in good form this season. Johannes is stronger in the air and will probably win most of the battles whenever crosses or long balls are played into the City box, but Ndoro can use his mobility and good ball skills to find a chink in the opposition's armour.

Lyle Lakay v Sirgio Kammies

Young Sirgio Kammies has done well in the right-back position, holding his own recently in Ajax’s 2-1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns. He’s got tons of energy to run up and down the right flank, which means he will be able to keep up with Lakay, who loves taking on players and whipping in crosses into the box. Lakay will have to use his experience to get the better of Kammies.

Thabo Nodada v Tercious Malepe

The midfield will be a hive of activity on match day, with these two players trying to get the better of one another. Nodada, nicknamed ‘Kante’, has been one of City’s top performing players. He’s always ready to get stuck into the challenges and it’s no different with Malepe, who is preferred in central midfield rather than at the back where he has played for the national Under-20 team. The left-footed Malepe sits in front of the back four, but at times enjoys getting forward, so Nodada will have to keep an eye on him.
