Billiat on Downs: 'I don't owe them'

Kaizer Chiefs star forward Khama Billiat commented on this weekend’s matchup with his former side Mamelodi Sundowns, insisting it is not about himself.

Billiat played an instrumental role in dismantling Sundowns in the recent Shell Helix Ultra Cup friendly played at FNB Stadium two weeks ago, alongside another former Brazilian Leonardo Castro.

The two, who formed part of coach Pitso Mosimane’s famous ‘CBD’ trio, was singled out for praise after the match by their former mentor.

But the Zimbabwean international refused the individual credit, insisting that the scoreline was as a result of the work of the entire team, which they hope to maintain going forward.

“It was Kaizer Chiefs, it wasn’t us. Everyone worked hard as you saw, and on the day, everyone tried to be on their best form,” said Billiat.

“We just hope that we’ll work that out and make sure that we’re consistent.”

With ‘Jingles’ having also warned that this weekend’s meeting would be the ‘real’ deal after their friendly defeat, much could be expected from Amakhosi in the way of proving that they can actually beat The Brazilians when it matters.

However, Billiat is not of the view that he has anything to prove when he returns to his old stomping ground on Sunday afternoon, and assured he is always ready to show up and perform.

“Do I owe them? No, I don’t owe them. I don’t want to say I was born ready, but I just love playing football and when I get injured, I get so worried,” he added.

“So, when I have a chance to play football, I love it so much.”
