Kaizer Chiefs are believed to be monitoring Stellenbosch FC central defender Sibusiso Mthethwa.
The 28-year-old previously has turned out for the likes of University of Pretoria and Free State Stars in his career. He left Platinum Stars to join Stellenbosch on a one-year deal following the relegation of the North West side.
According to a reliable source, Amakhosi coach Ernst Middendorp flew down to Cape Town to watch the player against TS Galaxy on Wednesday.
"Sibusiso Mthethwa from Stellenbosch, Chiefs is monitoring him. They even sent Middendorp to look at him. He even travelled to Cape Town," a close source told KickOff.com.
Contacted for comment, Stellenbosch head coach Steve Barker said the German mentor had only come to the match to watch their Nedbank Cup final opponents, not for his player.
"No, I wouldn't think so, I think he came to watch TS Galaxy, they are playing them in the Nedbank Cup final. I don't think he was there to look at any players," Barker said.
Without revealing much, the player's agent Ratshibvumo Mulovhedzi confirmed that indeed there is interest in his client.
"It's true there is an interest from Gauteng but I can't reveal the names of the clubs because he belongs to Stellenbosch," Mulovhedzi said.
Stellenbosch are leading the National First Division log and next face Mthethwa's former team in Cape Umoya United (formerly Platinum Stars) at UWC Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
