Ekstein: It can’t be me alone

Chiefs got off to a slow start under new coach Giovanni Solinas this season, winning just one of their opening eight fixtures in league and cup competitions.

Things have since begun to take shape however, with Amakhosi having strung together back-to-back Absa Premiership victories against Cape Town City and Free State Stars this week.

Ekstein, who got a rare start and managed an assist against Ea Lla Koto in midweek, says the spirit in camp is jovial again now that results are going their way and everyone has been afforded an opportunity recently.

“As a team we are happy, and we are happy that we are winning. You know Kaizer Chiefs is a big team, and people know us for winning games, so we are happy that we’ve been winning and everything is going well in the team,” said Ekstein.

“I’m happy with the way I played, and I’m happy that everybody is getting a chance. We as a team want to win and dominate whenever we are playing. I’m happy that we are doing that.”

While Ekstein may not be a regular starter, he has become one of the more senior members in the squad with this being his fifth season in the first team, but the 27-year-old playmaker insists the responsibilities lie not only with him.

“It can’t be me alone, we have too many players, so whoever is given a chance must showcase his talent and show the coach that he’s ready and willing to play for the team,” he added.

“The only thing is to showcase your talent. It’s not easy to play for Kaizer Chiefs because you have to deliver, so whenever you’re given a chance you need to showcase that you can play well.

“[Competition] does inspire us because as a team we’re doing well and we all want to play. It’s also nice to have competition so that you cannot relax in your position.

“So I’m happy that we have competition, and whoever is given a chance can do well. I’m excited to play with everybody – whoever is given a chance, I’m happy to play with.”
