Despite not getting regular game-time in recent months, a Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper is set to feature at the upcoming 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
With Itumeleng Khune out injured and set to miss Bafana Bafana’s AFCON campaign, Chiefs might still have Daniel Akpeyi flying their flag at the continental showpiece next month.
Akpeyi has been included in the provisional Nigeria squad named by Gernot Rohr on Wednesday, despite his recent displacement at Naturena.
The 32-year-old made a bold move in joining Amakhosi from Chippa United during the January transfer window, when emotions were high over the alleged crisis in Khune’s absence.
However, things have not quite gone accordingly for the burly shotstopper, who has managed just three appearances in Chiefs’ last 14 matches in all competitions.
This has largely been down to him being cup-tied in the Nedbank Cup, of which The Glamour Boys now find themselves in the final, and coach Ernst Middendorp opting instead to build the confidence of young protégé Bruce Bvuma.
But despite his club circumstances, Akpeyi has retained his place in Rohr’s side that will contest Group B alongside Guinea, Madagascar and Burundi.
