The 2016/17 PSL Player of the Season was handed his first start in the gold and black jersey on the weekend against his former team, lasting 77 minutes in his side’s 4-1 victory at Cape Town Stadium while earning high praise from his coach.

“It was Lebo’s first game, so he still has a bit of a problem with his fitness,” Solinas said after the game.

“He arrived at Chiefs after no pre-season, so we’ve been working with the fitness coach to get his fitness up. Lebo is a top player for me, a player who can help us score more goals. In my opinion, he is not 100% fit, but when he is, he’s an unbelievable player and he can help us score goals. He is a player for Bafana Bafana and a top scorer.”

Replacing Manyama was Philani Zulu, who came on in an unfamiliar position for his first league appearance of the campaign, capping it off with Chiefs’ fourth goal of the afternoon.

Solinas explained his use of the midfielder.

“Philani Zulu for me is an attacking midfielder and an offensive winger – this is the job he can do, either on the left or the right: when on the right, he comes inside with his left foot and can shoot or assist, because he is left-footed,” he said.

“He is a good player, and his contribution against City was good, but in my squad I have a lot of good players.”

Chiefs next tackle Free State Stars tonight, with kick-off at Goble Park set for 19h30.
