Chiefs doctor sheds light on Covid crisis

Kaizer Chiefs physician Dr. Hashendra Ramjee has provided insider insight into the current Covid-19 crisis within the club's ranks.

Chiefs are currently dealing with an unprecedented Covid-19 crisis at Naturena where 31 players and staff tested positive for the coronavirus last week, forcing the club to fail to honour its league fixture against Cape Town City over the weekend.

Matters have since gone from bad to worse for the Amakhosi after it emerged that five more players had tested positive, forcing the club to announce that it is unable to travel for the fixture against Golden Arrows on Wednesday either.

Speaking following the announcement, club physician Dr. Hashendra Ramjee shed light on the rapidly unfolding drama at the club and provided a possible return date for some of the virus-stricken stars.

"The Kaizer Chiefs Football Club medical team dealt with the recent Covid crisis within the club by following the current NICD and Department of Health protocols for positive cases and contacts," Dr. Ramjee said.

"The positive cases were requested to self-isolate and primary contacts were asked to quarantine for a period of 10 days as per these protocols. All players and staff have been regularly monitored.

"Repeat testing was implemented for the last 48 hours for players and staff who were in quarantine. These tests, unfortunately, revealed five more positive cases, which justified the approach taken by the club in terms of our responsibility to our players, staff and to the football community.

"Further to this, players who have tested positive and completed their self-isolation period will be managed with an evidence-based graduated return to play protocol and algorithm used for elite athletes.

"Depending on the players' progress during this managed phase, the player would usually be fit resume playing in seven days."
