Komphela: Lessons to be learned

Amakhosi managed to close out an otherwise dour campaign on a high as they clinched a 1-0 victory over newly-crowned Absa Premiership champions Bidvest Wits on Saturday, with Gustavo Paez scoring the only goal at the FNB Stadium.

REPORT: Chiefs sink champions Wits

There was an air of controversy to Chiefs’ winning goal, with Wits claiming the Glamour Boys should have returned the ball to them after the referee had brought a halt to play, but Komphela felt such a small detail meant little on the day.

“The day is theirs [Wits], let them take the glory, and not cloud it by small things that you can ignore,” he told SuperSport TV after the game.

“But congratulations to them and we will move on and [look ahead] to next season.”

Speaking of Chiefs’ below-par season, Komphela said: “Any explanation in football comes across as an excuse, so I will do what Steve does: keep quiet, move on do business.

“But… I think we gave it [the title] away. With eight matches we gave away 18 points in a manner which is not supposed to be. Eighteen plus [points] where we’re sitting now [would have won Chiefs the trophy].

“We cannot afford [to give away points]. There’s matches where [we] gave it away last kick, matches where [we] gave away lapses of concentration, missing penalties… a whole lot of [mistakes].

“But as a coach, you cannot highlight those as they come across as excuses. You own up, you put up and you put it on your chest and move on.

“I hope we’ve learned lessons this season.”
