Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Maluleka has opened up on the team’s culture of dressing up to training and revealed his teammates who always get it right, and those who don’t.
Following Chiefs’ launch of their collaboration with streetwear brand Butan earlier this week, KickOff.com delved into the fashion wars that take place at Naturena.
Amid all the hype surrounding this weekend’s Soweto Derby, Maluleka has discussed some of the lifestyle elements that go on behind the scenes at training, such as the fancy-dress battles that often takes place on the players’ social media.
“We always try and keep up with the latest trends, and we are the glamour boys for a reason – when we go to training, we still show up,” Maluleka explained to this website.
“We’ve got to look smart; we can’t just get dressed like we’re going next door. You’re going to work, so you dress respectfully.
“That’s something that we’ve had and the culture we’ve created for ourselves as well.
“I think the guys know, because sometimes when the chairman [Kaizer Motaung] or when Bobby sees us, they want to see a Kaizer Chiefs player, which is class, glamour, with a presence.”
Asked who the best dressed individuals are in the team, Maluleka refused to single one out but listed a couple of individuals who stand out amongst the rest.
“There’s quite a few [who dress well] – I’ll also put myself there. But I think guys take turns, some guys come in suits – [Joseph] Molangoane, Rama Mphahlele, myself, [Willard] Katsande – you’ve seen his posts, Lebo [Manyama] as well,” he added.
“There’s a lot of decent guys – [Philani] Zulu, Stash [Ntshangase]. I mean, ss I said, you can’t just dress up like you’re going next door.”
While there are some funky trendsetters, there are also those who try but just don’t hit it off, and ‘Mido’ has revealed those who have got it amiss in recent times.
“Yoh, don’t do that to me [laughs]. Let me see … Who tries the hardest but never gets it right? I think there’s a couple of guys who try sometimes but don’t get it,” he responded.
“There was Stash now the other day, he didn’t get it; we had a small laugh the other day with Itu [Khune] – he didn’t get it as well.
“I think I’ve also had my faults, because we always try and keep up with the latest trends, and it might look good on other guys but when you try it, it’s not the same.”
