Williams future at SSU to be decided this weekend?

The future of Ronwen Williams at SuperSport United is set to be determined by the arrival of Head Coach Gavin Hunt.

Williams has been strongly linked with a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in recent weeks and has already expressed his ambitions of finally winning a league title.

However, Matsatsantsa CEO Stan Mathews confirmed that the Bafana Bafana number one is likely to move on from the club, but the final decision about his future will be determined by his meeting with Hunt this weekend.

Hunt was officially unveiled at the helm of the team on Thursday.

“We have had a good chat with Ronwen (Williams). We know where he stands, we know what he wants in his career and we are going to try and accommodate that,” Matthews told KickOff.com.

“It’s never just a straightforward situation because there are negotiations, there are discussions, now I have a coach, and maybe there are players, so there is nothing that has been advanced to any level that I can concretize now.

“But certainly once I have sat down with Gavin (Hunt) over the weekend and look at different permutations on how I can freshen up the team and what kind of replacements we can get and which positions and what that’s going to take, then I will have a clear picture in my own mind about how viable the sale of Ronwen Williams would be.

“It’s likely that he is going to move but as I said, it’s something I have to sit and discuss with Gavin and if we can get the right kind of replacement. Gavin is very strong on the spine of the team and that starts with the keeper.
“Ronwen is the national team goalkeeper, he is our most capped player, he is our captain, he is our poster child, he is our longest-serving player, probably the longest-serving player of any club in the history of South African football.

“So it’s not a normal trading of a player, this is a son of the club and someone that is going to be impossible to replace in the short term,” said Mathews.

SuperSport United have already sold midfielder Sipho Mbule to Sundowns ahead of the start of the new season.
