Player exodus at Free State Stars

Relegated Absa Premiership club Free State Stars have decided to part ways with no less than five of their players.

According to a source within the club Patrick Phungwayo, Goodman Dlamini, Tshepo Tema, Samkelo Mbambo, and Makhehleni Makhaula will be released due to their high salaries.

The Betlehem side were relegated to the National First Division on Saturday after finishing at the bottom of the Absa Premiership table.

With the NFD grant at only R500 000 per month, it was always going to be difficult for the club to keep some of its playing personnel.

"Some of the players we can't afford their salaries for next season so they will terminate the contracts," a source tells

"Patrick Phungwayo, Goodman Dlamini, Tshepo Tema, Samkelo Mbambo and Makhehleni Makhaula... so they will give them their clearances."

Stars general manager Rantsi Mokoena could not be reached for comment as he has been busy in meetings.
