Arendse would have loved to see Khune playing his football abroad because he is on the same level with some of the best goalkeepers in the world, especially when it comes to his distribution.
The former Bafana Bafana number one, who is now the keeper coach at SuperSport United, feels Khune was at his best at the time the World Cup was played in South Africa in 2010 and his representatives should have taken the opportunity to secure a deal for him abroad.
“This is my frustration when it comes to Itu. You look at that period when he was at his very best. He is not there now, because he has moved on in his career. But there was a period, I think it was around the World Cup, where I fully believed he should have gone overseas.
“Even though he is not far off now, back then he was on par or even better than some of the best in the world, when you look at his ability and distribution. That’s why it’s been frustrating when it comes to someone like him. He is just an example of one of the best we have here who should have gone overseas.”
Khune is being tipped to win the Absa Premiership Goalkeeper of the Season award, having kept 16 clean sheets in what has been a difficult campaign for Amakhosi.
