Five Chiefs matches that were abandoned


Following Kaizer Chiefs’ no-show against Cape Town City on Saturday, here is a look at some of the other matches involving the Amakhosi that have been abandoned in the past.

Chiefs made headlines over the weekend after failing to appear for their scheduled DStv Premiership clash against Cape Town City, with the full repercussions of the no-show yet to be made clear.

Prior to the match, the Soweto giants announced that there had been a mass Covid-19 outbreak which saw no fewer than 31 people test positive for the virus, meaning the club would not be able to host the fixture against the Citizens.

Cape Town City arrived at the venue as planned and remained present until the match was abandoned, with Chiefs expected to be handed a 3-0 defeat and a potential fine per the NSL Regulations.

1994, Kaizer Chiefs v Orlando Pirates

The 1994 edition of the Soweto Derby was abandoned due to crowd trouble, with reports of seats being ripped up by away fans, and Kaizer Chiefs were later awarded the result due to the fixture being abandoned.

16 February 1997, Bloemfontein Celtic v Kaizer Chiefs

In February 1997, Chiefs' away match against Bloemfontein Celtic was abandoned in the 40th minute after crowd trouble from the home side resulted in the encounter being called off. At the time, the Soweto giants were leading 2-0 and they were ultimately awarded the win after the disturbance was deemed to have been instigated by Siwelele.

11 April 2001, Kaizer Chiefs v Orlando Pirates

In what remains one of the darkest days in South African football, the Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates was called off amid the Ellis Park disaster, in which 43 supporters were killed during a stampede.

15 September 2012, Kaizer Chiefs v Black Leopards

The Glamour Boys' league match against Black Leopards in 2012 was abandoned with just 32 minutes due to inclement weather at the FNB Stadium, with Chiefs leading 2-0 at the time. On that occasion, however, the fixture was replayed four days later when Stuart Baxter’s side claimed a 2-1 win, courtesy of goals from Bernard Parker and Siphiwe Tshabalala

4 December 2021, Kaizer Chiefs v Cape Town City

Kaizer Chiefs mid-season resurgence was brought to a sudden halt on 4 December 2021 after the club was unable to honour a league fixture against Cape Town City due to a Covid-19 outbreak. The match was abandoned, with the away side awarded the result.
