Fadlu Davids to take on his master, Middendorp

Maritzburg have handed Davids the task of leading the club as acting coach in Tuesday evening’s Absa Premiership clash between two clubs that have been quick to fire coaches this season.

Maritzburg have been linked with Clive Barker as a replacement for Mandla Ncikazi, who was dismissed last week. Middendorp replaced Kinnah Phiri at Stars at the end of August, although his first match in charge was not until September 12, a 3-0 victory over Chippa United.

Ironically, Davids’ first task is to strategize against the man that has trusted him as his number two for the past three years.

Since retiring at the end of the 2011/12 season – aged just 31 – Davids spent much of his time learning the coaching trade as a deputy to Middendorp, first at Maritzburg, then at Bloemfontein Celtic and Chippa United.

In 2012/13 he served as number two to Middendorp at Maritzburg, then followed him to Celtic in October 2013 and at the beginning of this year he joined the German at Chippa United.

Farook Kadodia, the Maritzburg chairman confirms: “Davids is our acting coach so he will be in charge tomorrow.”
