Shonga makes immediate impact

Former Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City striker Justin Shonga has made an encouraging start to life in Egypt with Ismaily.

The Zambia international left South Africa for the Egyptian Premier League side this week after signing a three-year contract and in his first game, he's already shown why he was once one of the most in-demand talents in Africa.

He played the full 90 minutes in their pre-season outing against Al-Mokawloon and had a hand in both goals after scoring and grabbing an assist.

While his quality was never in doubt, it's now a journey towards full fitness for the Zambia international who was snubbed by AmaZulu before the start of the 2021/22 DStv Premiership campaign after a long spell out of the game.

"I think the boy does have a lot of quality, he's really good and if you can get him back to that fitness level... he's going to need time, it's been a long time to be out of football," Usuthu head coach McCarthy said back in August.

"I'm sad for the player, he's got all the quality and attributes but he just needs a bit of time to get back to that level."

Shonga netted 17 goals and registered 17 assists in 97 games across all competitions during his time in Mzansi but often featured out wide during his spell with Pirates.
