Mashaba worked with Khune, who was named PSL Goalkeeper of the Season for the fourth time last week, during his second full-time stint as Bafana coach from July 2014 to December 2016.
"The best goalkeepers today, if you watch, set up attacks for teams," said Mashaba.
"Khune, because he's trained by a very high-skilled goalkeeper coach, he passes the ball 45 metres direct and it goes straight to the person.
"He sets the attacking tone for the team. His passes makes the team to attack, he doesn't normally play short."
Mashaba believes in developing skillsets in training.
"We need to sit down and look at ourselves on what we want to achieve out of our training sessions instead of running players until they show wagging tongues and we say, 'Eyy sibatholile namhlanje [we got them today].
"You got them [but] what did they gain? Nothing. They gained nothing. Get them but at the end of the day you say, 'they've gained one, two and three'."
