The Clever Boys overcame the Buccaneers by a solitary first-half goal, courtesy of James Keene, despite the visitors showing plenty of promise in attack in the second half at the Bidvest Stadium.

Tinkler lamented the soft goal they conceded and felt they deserved something after coming back strongly in the second half and creating numerous goal-scoring chances.

“The way we conceded the goal [was disappointing], but I also think they showed a lot more aggression in getting to the ball first,” he told KickOff.com after the match.

“We looked a little bit lethargic in the beginning of the game, although, we did create one or two chances – we hit the post – in the first half.

“Second half was far better from us… Moeneeb [Josephs] made two great saves; I don’t think Brighton [Mhlongo] was tested once in the second half.”

He added: “It’s just that our crossing was poor; our final ball was poor; the quality of our corners were poor; the quality of our set-pieces were poor; when they were actually very good against [Jomo] Cosmos.

“That was a bit disappointing for me but it was a far better performance in the second half, and we probably deserved more.”

Many might argue that it was somewhat of a dispirited performance from the Soweto side, who had just recently beaten Jomo Cosmos 5-0, but Tinkler insists they were not short of motivation coming into the tie and conceded that Wits are a tough side to beat at home.

“No, I don’t think they were demotivated. I think they knew the importance of trying to win this game but they also know that this is a difficult [game], and not many teams come here and beat them at home at the moment,” he said.

“They are a team laying second on the log, playing with a lot of confidence and morale, and we let ourselves down by one lapse of concentration which lead to us conceding.

“But if you look at the overall, it was a fairly even game. I don’t think that they dominated at all.”
