Stellies snatch victory at TS Galaxy

Premiership

A late own-goal helped Stellenbosch FC secure a 1-0 victory over TS Galaxy in their final DStv Premiership clash of the year on Wednesday afternoon.

Galaxy had no further than three changes in Pogiso Sanoka, Ebrahim Seedat and Bathusi Aubaas from their clash with Golden Arrows, whilst Stellies missed Nathan Sinkala and Junior Mendieta.

The Rockets began on the back-foot after a few minutes in the contest, as a defensive error brought Ashley Du Preez to grab the opener but he failed to beat goalkeeper Marlon Heugh.

Galaxy were on the receiving end of the same scenario within seconds from a poor pass out by Sage Stephens, but Mthokozisi Mngomezulu missed target completely.

Sead Ramovic’s men enjoyed more chances just inside the half-hour mark from close-range opportunities by Ethan Brooks, Mngomezulu and Seedat, but neither profited.

The Rockets’ momentum were interrupted a minute from halftime after an injury brought Mngomezulu’s spell to an end and had Augustine Kwem enter.

After a quiet start to the second half, Galaxy got a chance to go ahead through the expertise of Sihle Ndluli but his effort was effectively parried by goalkeeper Sage Stephens.

Whilst Stellies put on a triple change in Solly Khunyedi, Judas Moseamedi and Stanley Dimgba, a chance opened up from a counter-attack midway in but Dimgba flashed wide.

The Rockets continued to have opportunities albeit half-hearted in the closing exchanges, but lacked the cutting the edge well inside the final third.

Amidst their dominance, the Maroons hit the front three minutes to the end when Given Msimango directed Moseamedi’s low ball from the left into his own net.

Stellies, who had their tails up, nearly surrendered the lead in optional time from a teasing ball in the area but Kwem headed over as it finished 1-0 to the visitors.
