Downs open 18-point lead with Galaxy scalp

Premiership

Mamelodi Sundowns defeated TS Galaxy 3-0 to move 18 points clear at the top of the DStv Premiership table on Wednesday evening.

Rushine De Reuck, Andile Jali, Themba Zwane, and Surprise Ralani missed out for Sundowns, but Thapelo Morena and Haashim Domingo were given starts after impressing against Al Ahly.

Sundowns made their presence count towards the first 20 minutes as misplaced possession by Ethan Brooks fell to Khuliso Mudau, who drilled a fine strike into the top corner from outside the area.

The Rockets' task was made even tough a minute later after midfielder Lindokuhle Mbatha was dismissed following a tough challenge on Peter Shalulile.

As Masandawana possessed ascendancy on all fronts, the Rockets looked to balance the overall play ten minutes towards halftime and introduced Aphelele Teto in place of Brooks.

Sundowns had a slow start to the second half despite bringing on Sphelele Mkhulise for Rivaldo Coetzee, and had Teto curl a cutback from a tight angle in the area wide of the mark.

The near misses from the Rockets didn’t rattle Masandawana who nearly had a second when Domingo dropped a shoulder and cut into the area minutes apart to go wide of the near corner.

There was no denying the diminutive midfielder midway through the second half after he obtained possession outside the area and fired into the top corner much to the jubilation of his teammates.

Sundowns snatched a third before the final ten minutes after Shalulile arrived at the far post to bundle home a supply from substitute Divine Lunga.

A fourth from the table-toppers looked on the cards three minutes from time, but Neo Maema’s thunderous attempt failed to find target and therefore left Sundowns to victory.
