Shalulile helps Downs punish Swallows

Peter Shaluile moved on to 18 goals for the campaign after bagging a hat-trick in Mamelodi Sundowns' 4-2 win over Swallows FC on Wednesday night.

The Brazilians brought back most of the regulars from the side that lost against Maritzburg United the last time out, alongside George Maluleka who got his first start in the league while goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse stood in for both Kennedy Mweene and Denis Onyango who were not available.

Sundowns got off to a dream start after Peter Shalulile opened the scoring in the tenth minute after nodding home a cross from Maluleka.

Shalulile quickly doubled their lead and got his brace six minutes later with a superb volley just inside the box after a ball over the top by Maluleka.

Swallows had a good reaction as Dillion Solomons pulled a goal back immediately thereafter with a cracking low strike past Pieterse at his near post.

However, the Brazilians got into another gear as Bradley Ralani restored their two-goal cushion just before the half-hour mark from a moment of individual brilliance in the box, as he had time and space to control a lobbed pass and fired a strike into the bottom corner.

After making a few changes at the break, the Birds were unfortunate not to get another goal back two minutes into the second stanza after Kagiso Malinga went clear on goal but Pieterse made a crucial save.

Sundowns were in control of the game after that, knocking the ball around mostly in their own half but that kept Swallows at bay, as they were struggling to get on the ball.

The game only came back to life in the closing stages as Ruzaigh Gamildien reduced the deficit in the last minute with a looping header into the far corner.

However, Shalulile killed off the game seconds later with a close-range finish after Zwane's initial effort was saved by Ngobeni. Shalulile also became the first player to score a hat-trick in the DStv Premiership this season.
