Chippa deny Swallows three points

Swallows FC missed an opportunity to go top of the table after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Chippa United at Dobsonville Stadium on Wednesday.

Sammy Seabi came in for Lebohang Mokoena and Zaphaniah Mbokoma returned from suspension to take the place of Fawaaz Basadien in the Swallows' starting XI, while Chippa remained unchanged from their victory over TS Galaxy.

Swallows had the first attempt on goal. Sammy Seabi did well to intercept a stray pass from Chippa goalkeeper Ayanda Mtshali and immediately found Kgaogelo Sekgota at the back post, but the winger's touch let him down with the goal at his mercy.

The Dube Birds were flying and took the lead in the 11th minute. An accurate long ball from Seabi was played into Ruzaigh Gamildien, who chested the ball down expertly before thundering the volley first-time into the right-hand corner with Mtshali standing absolutely no chance.

Dan Malesela's side were settling into the game and beginning to play some flowing football towards the end of the first period.

The Chilli Boys started the second half as they had ended the first - strongly - and came close twice in quick succession shortly after the interval. First, Bienvenu Eva Nga held the ball up and laid it off to Andile Mbenyane, who curled the ball narrowly over the crossbar and then Mbenyane headed wide when he found himself unmarked from a corner.

Chippa were almost level in the 70th minute when Mbenyane's effort hit the underside of the crossbar and nearly went over the line before bouncing back out.

Five minutes later, Malesela's side were indeed level. The ball was cleared from the corner unconvincingly to the edge of the box and Kurt Lentjies came running onto the ball as the red sea parted before thundering a magnificent volley into the right-hand corner.

Both teams would have settled for a point in the end, with Swallows looking a bit fatigued in the second half.
