Usuthu hold unbeaten Swallows

Swallows FC extended their unbeaten in the DStv Premiership to 15 matches after a goalless draw against AmaZulu on Sunday afternoon.

Thela Ngobeni continued in goal, as Swallows recalled captain Lebohang Mokoena, Vuyo Mere and Given Thibedi amongst others, while new signing Zukile Kewuti debuted for Usuthu.

The visiting side nearly had a swift start when a ball through the inside-right of the six-yard area released Lehlohonolo Majoro, but Njabulo Ngcobo thwarted the veteran forward.

Swallows unleashed a threat of their own before the midway period after neat footwork from Kgaogelo Sekgota on the left-side picked out Mokoena, who nodded over from the back-post.

Limited amount of chances from either side close to halftime appeared amidst a speculative shot from outside the area by Thabo Matlaba and a smart effort from Luvyo Memela.

Usuthu changed tact after halftime with a double substitution in Sphelele Magubane and a debut for Samkelo Mgwazela.

It was the Dube Birds though who enjoyed the earlier forays in the second stanza, but Mokoena, Sekgota and their top-scorer Ruzaigh Gamildien couldn’t profit.

AmaZulu recovered soon thereafter and pushed forward from the right-side through a telling ball from captain Mbongeni Gumede, but goalkeeper Ngobeni parried.

The balance of play however quickly shifted back to the Dube Birds, as Mokoena along with Thibedi looked to carve an opening through the middle but to no avail.

As the match headed to a close, the struggle up front for either side continued with numerous balls into the area leading to naught therefore it finished goalless in Dobsonville.
