SSU sink Maritzburg with late winner

Premiership

SuperSport United struck in the dying stages of the second half to secure a 2-1 win over Maritzburg United in DStv Premiership action on Saturday evening.

Veteran defender Buhle Mkhwanazi started once again for SuperSport following last Sunday’s outing against Swallows FC, while Thobeka Zondi made his debut for Maritzburg.

Matsatsantsa continued their free-scoring rate ten minutes in when Thamsanqa Gabuza rose above former Orlando Pirates man Alfred Ndengane to nod in Jamie Webber’s corner-kick.

The Team of Choice should’ve been level moments later from a low pass on the edge of the area by Daylon Claasen to Amadou Soukouna, but his strike didn’t trouble Ronwen Williams.

SuperSport needed to do more defending in particular Williams, who produced a superb near-post save to thwart a well-taken free-kick on the half-hour mark from Soukouna.

Ernst Middendorp’s charges continued to enjoy a bright spell just as the halftime period beckoned, whilst Matsatsantsa struggled to get a hold of matters in both defence and attack.

The Team of Choice made a double change at the restart, with Lifa Hlongwane brought in for Richard Zumah and Leletu Skelem introduced for Zondi.

No guessing the frustrations became clear on the path of SuperSport, who with a quarter of the match gone struggled to get back and re-take the lead.

Maritzburg took a lot of confidence in their stride following the leveller and within the latter stages nearly had the winner through Soukouna, but he was thwarted.

SuperSport did eventually snatch the winner in the dying minutes when Thatayaone Ditlhokwe arrived unmarked in the area to head in from close-range with the final kick of the game.
