SuperSport & Chippa share the spoils

Premiership

A late penalty helped SuperSport United rescue a 1-1 draw against Chippa United in the DStv Premiership on Tuesday evening.

Matsatsantsa were without Thamsanqa Gabuza and Iqraam Rayners through suspension, while Chippa made three changes as Andile Mbenyane, Janovane September and Ronald Pfumbidzai were recalled.

Chippa had a big chance to go ahead after 12 minutes through Bienvenu Eva Nga, but an intervention from Luke Fleurs resulted in a loose ball which Azola Matrose received and hoofed.

The host regained confidence towards the middle of the first half and hit the upright from a first-time strike outside the area by Jamie Webber with a layoff from Aubrey Ngoma.

As the balance of play remained even, Chippa got the breakthrough five minutes to halftime when Matrose cut-in from the left and rifled powerful shot past Ronwen Williams at the near post.

SuperSport introduced a double substitution following the break in Thalente Mbatha for Webber and withdrew Jesse Donn to introduce Bangaly Soumahoro.

A spell of relentless pressure from the host soon at the restart happened with deliveries in and around the defensive third from amongst others Selaelo Rasebotja and Siyabonga Nhlapo.

The Chilli Boys continued to enjoy limited offensive interventions, as a back-heel effort in the area from Ghampani Lungu nearly led the host to the leveller late on in the contest.

SuperSport finally had their rewards two minutes from time when Lungu netted from the penalty spot after Donn went down in the centre of the area.

Matsatsantsa were fired up following the leveller and pushed for a winner in the closing seconds, but Tembo's men were unable to carve out another opening as the encounter ended all square.
