Galaxy hold Pirates at Orlando

Premiership

Orlando Pirates' inconsistency in the DStv Premiership continued after a 1-1 draw with TS Galaxy at Orlando Stadium.

Pirates came with just one change in Ben Motshwari, who replaced Vincent Pule while Azola Tshobeni started his second match in a row.

The Buccaneers made their intentions clear 11 minutes in when Bongani Sam found space in the centre of the area to send a low cross from Fortune Makaringe into the roof of the net.

It was nearly cancelled within a minute after Mxolisi Macuphu turned in the area from a teasing ball to fire in a low shot, but Pirates goalkeeper Richard Ofori parried for a corner-kick.

The lead was eventually scrapped before 20 minutes when debutant Masilake Phohlongo showed up in the middle of the area to head a cross from out wide off the ground and into the top of the net.

Pirates should’ve retaken the lead minutes later through a header from Makaringe, but it went off target before a curling shot from Deon Hotto brought a smart save from Marlon Heugh.

Pule came on for Tshobeni ahead of the second half after the youngster struggled to carry on playing following a knock.

Both sides continued to battle away in the earlier exchanges of the second stanza, as Pirates missed a big chance to go back ahead with a wayward effort from Hotto following a cross by Sam.

Galaxy were let off the hook towards the last 20 minutes when a cross-cum shot from the right-side by Hotto clipped the top the woodwork with Heugh caught off guard.

The Sea Robbers continued probing following the closing seconds through Thembinkosi Lorch and a snap shot from captain Happy Jele, but it stayed 1-1 in Soweto.
