Bucs secure first-ever win over Galaxy

Orlando Pirates ended a run of successive draws with a 2-0 win over TS Galaxy to go second on the table in the DStv Premiership on Saturday evening.

Pirates made three changes from the 1-1 draw against AmaZulu on Wednesday in Collins Makgaka, Thabang Monare and Terrence Dzvukamanja compared to Galaxy’s one in Wayde Lekay, who scored in the 3-1 win over Chippa United.

After a positive start, Pirates grabbed the lead after 14 minutes when a peach of a ball from Deon Hotto found Bandile Shandu who went on to rifle the roof of the net with a solid strike.

The Buccaneers were fired up following the breakthrough and went in search of a second after a few minutes through a corner-kick from Hotto, but his supply didn’t find a black shirt.

Pirates continued to trouble the Rockets on the half-hour mark and a ball in from Hotto spotted Kwame Peprah, who arrowed against the upright from a flick over goalkeeper Marlon Heugh.

The Rockets remained unsettled as the first half began to wind down with a ball out wide to Shandu from Ntsikelelo Nyauza nearly forcing an own-goal.

Pirates continued their commanding act following the second period and extended their lead through a simple finish from Makgaka off a ball in from Hotto.

The Buccaneers hoped for a third within the last quarter of play, but Shandu’s speculative attempt from afar only brought a save out of Heugh.

A double substitution from the Sea Robbers 60 minutes gone saw Thembinkosi Lorch in for Dzvukamanja and Makgaka removed for Ben Motshwari to enter the fray.

Galaxy began to open up and forced a save from Pirates goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane through a shot from Mthokozisi Mngomezulu towards the end before Masilake Phohlongo took aim too.

However, it was the Buccaneers kept calm and registered the victory following back-to-back draws in the Premiership.
