Wasteful Pirates held by Citizens

Premiership

Orlando Pirates were made to rue their missed chances as they played to a 0-0 draw with Cape Town City FC at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday.

Captain Happy Jele started on the bench and recalled Ntsikelelo Nyauza while Kabelo Dlamini and Fortune Makaringe were also recalled after the big victory in the CAF Confederation Cup over the weekend.

It was the Buccaneers who enjoyed a promising start and could have been in the lead on three minutes through a powerful drive near the area from Bandile Shandu but Hugo Marques repelled.

There was another clear chance for the Buccaneers minutes apart after Dlamini slipped Deon Hotto in behind before the latter went and looked for the near corner, but found Marques on hand.

Pirates still managed to find joy in the last third following the half-hour mark and squandered two clear chances from a one-on-one by Shandu and a sitter by Thabang Monare.

It was the Citizens who had a tough first half that finished the strongest in the latter minutes and should have broken the deadlock through Morris before the break, but the striker fired straight at Siyabonga Mpontshane from six-yards out.

With City bringing on Katlego Mokhuoane at halftime for Brice Ambina, the Buccaneers went close once again on 58 minutes when Makarine got in from a tight angle and forced a save out of Marques.

Thereafter, the Citizens managed to get in their own and reduced the Buccaneers to nervous bit of defending from Olisa Ndah in particular.

Pirates didn’t crack amidst the bit of pressure thrown their way by the Citizens within the closing quarter and put Marques to work again off a stern attempt from a decent area by Dlamini.

The Buccaneers were at the end of a clear chance in the final two minutes from a move on the right, but Zakhele Lepasa saw the ball stuck between his feet and allowed City to grab a point.
