Gallants boost top 8 bid with Stellies scalp

Premiership

Marumo Gallants clinched their third consecutive victory in the DStv Premiership defeating Stellenbosch 1-0 on Sunday evening.

Gallants were unchanged from the thumping win over Baroka, while Stellies also kept the same side that was held by AmaZulu.

Steve Barker's charges were creating good chances on counter-attacks in the early stages as Du Preez went through on goal but was denied from point-blank range by goalkeeper King Ndlovu.

Bahlabane Ba Ntwa were fortunate not to be punished on the half-hour mark after a mistake at the back led to a turnover in the box but Ortiz fired the final product wide.

Stellies shot themselves in the foot after conceding a penalty for a foul on Celimpilo Ngema in the box just before the half-time break and Ndlondo did not need any second invitation, as he dispatched the spot-kick and gave Gallants the lead heading to the break.

The visitors were camping inside Gallants' half in the opening exchanges of the second stanza but they were let down by the final pass.

Ibraheem Jabaar came close to snatching the equaliser for the Western Cape side 19 minutes before time with a low cracking strike on the edge of the box but Ndlovu was equal to the task.

Witht time running out, Barker made attacking substitutions in the last quarter of an hour as Jayden Adams replaced Stanley Dimgba and Waseem Isaacs came on for Du Preez.

Ndlondo should have buried the game in the last two minutes after latching onto a cross by Joseph Malongoane at the near post but his first-time shot sailed just wide from point-blank range.

Nevertheless, that miss would not go on to haun Malesela's men, who held on to move up to tenth on the log, one point off a top eight spot while Stellies remained in fifth place.
