Maritzburg stun Downs with late winner

Premiership

Maritzburg United handed Mamelodi Sundowns their second defeat of the DStv Premiership campaign with a 2-1 triumph on Saturday night.

Masandawana made just two changes from their win at TS Galaxy showed in Rushine De Reuck and Sphelele Mkhulise, while Lesedi Kapinga was given another start.

It was Sundowns who had the bright spell earlier on after Kapinga worked an angle from a tight situation in the area to get a shot away which Marcel Engelhardt steered back into play.

Maritzburg did came into their own as the first half settled, but the Brazilians still enjoyed the lion share of chances in which Lyle Lakay dragged a shot from outside the area over the top.

Therefore, the lead followed in the last six minutes of the half after Peter Shalulile positioned awkwardly and headed a telling cross from Haashim Domingo past Engelhardt.

It was a lead that lasted just two minutes as a corner-kick into the heart of the six-yard area by Keegan Ritchie led Alfred Ndengane to a towering leap to head into a gaping net.

As Ndengane was withdrawn ahead of the second half, the Brazilians were denied a second goal when a goal-line clearance from Nazeer Allie smothered Kapinga.

The former Black Leopards man was at it again minutes apart for when he worked freely into the area to set up Shalulile, but Allie made another guilt-edge clearance.

Sundowns didn’t lose momentum a little thereafter and had a penalty awarded which Neo Maema won from the hand of Allie in the last eight minutes, but Engelhardt parried Themba Zwane.

It turned out to be a costly miss as United earned a penalty at the other end late following a foul by Kennedy Mweene on Amadou Soukouna, who stepped up to convert for a rare win over Sundowns.
