Downs pull five points clear at the summit

Premiership

Mamelodi Sundowns extended their lead at the top of the DStv Premiership table with a 2-0 win over Chippa United on Sunday afternoon.

Captain Hlompho Kekana missed out as Gaston Sirino, Sphelele Mkhulise and Andile Jali were brought in to the midfield.

Masandawana, who had the lion's share of play early on, were ahead on 23 minutes after Lebohang Maboe charged onto a cross from Peter Shalulile to head past goalkeeper Ayanda Mtshali.

A second was on the cards for the Brazilians closer to the interval as Themba Zwane brought Mtshali to a point-blank save from a pass by Maboe.

Chippa’s first sight of goal came a little later through a long-range strike from Ayabulela Konqobe, but Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango saved comfortably.

The Chilli Boys made a double change ten minutes to the break, as Augustine Kwem came on for Avela Cezu and Gregory Damons removed for Thabiso Lebitso.

It made no immediate effect as Masandawana doubled their lead on 38 minutes when Shalulile brought down a cross from Shalulile to roll the ball across for Sirino to slot into an empty net.

Masandawana refused to let up in the second half, with Lyle Lakay firing a through ball wide of the post after combining with Shalulile and Kermit Erasmus.

Another opening came the Brazilians way soon before the closing period through a cross from Sirino, but Shalulile blazed the resultant supply off target.

The Brazilians made it three towards the last 15 minutes from a thumping strike by Mosa Lebusa, but the match officials spotted an offside in the build-up and disallowed the strike.

Sundowns continued looking for a third in the final minutes, but debutant Gift Motupa failed to turn in a cross from the right as the two goals were enough to secure the spoils.
