CT City back on the winning trail

Premiership

Cape Town City got back to winning ways in the DStv Premiership after defeating Maritzburg United 3-2 on Tuesday evening.

The Citizens made three changes to the side that was held to a draw by TS Galaxy in a four-goal thriller, as Thato Mokeke, Thabo Nodada and Tashreeq Morris were all recalled while United welcomed back Zukile Kewuti.

City had a dream start after Mduduzi Mdantsane gave them the lead in the 11th minute with an easy finish one-on-one with goalkeeper Marcel Engelhardt after a poor back pass by Alfred Ndengane.

Ernst Middendorp's charges should have equalised in the 22nd minute after Daylon Claasen went through on goal and beat shot-stopper Hugo Marques with a shot across goal but his effort missed the gaping net narrowly wide.

Maritzburg were pushing forward in numbers and they were caught on a counter-attack on the half-hour mark after Fagrie Lakay raced through on goal and beat Engelhardt but his effort hit the side-netting and the hosts went to the half-time break leading by an odd goal.

Eric Tinkler's troops had another good start in the second stanza, as Lakay doubled their lead five minutes from the half-time break with a well drilled strike into the bottom corner, after carving out space just inside the box.

The Team of Choice were creating chances and Leletu Skelem eventually pulled a goal back 20 minutes before time with a clinical strike past Marques after bringing down a long diagonal through ball in the box.

Mdantsane had a big chance for the Citizens a minute later after beating the offside trap to go through inside the box but he volleyed his effort over the bar, one-on-one with Engelhardt.

Morris restored a two-goal cushion for City eight minutes before time with a free header inside the box after a cross by Lakay from the right flank.

Bongokuhule Hlongwane got the second goal back for United in the last three minutes with a close-range low curling strike to set up a nervy finish, but Tinkler's men held on to claim three points, as they moved to within one point of a top-eight spot.
