Pirates & AmaZulu play out feisty draw

Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu played to a 1-1 draw in their DStv Premiership encounter on Wednesday evening.

The Buccaneers showed one change in Abel Mabaso for Linda Mntambo to Usuthu’s five in Kgotso Moleko, Tercious Malepe, Siyethemba Sithebe, Tshepang Moremi and Siphelele Mthembu.

Pirates started on the back-foot and were unfortunate not to trail following 14 minutes through Malepe’s diving header at the near post with the supply coming from Andre De Jong.

However, with the half-hour mark on the cards the Buccaneers seized control after Deon Hotto applied a smart left-footed volley from a late entry past the reach of goalkeeper Veli Mothwa.

AmaZulu looked to hit back within minutes through a strike from range by Keagan Buchanan, but the former Kaizer Chiefs man watched his attempt drift wide of target.

The host eventually levelled a minute from halftime after Moremi attacked a loose ball in the area from a cutback by Luvuyo Memela to slam in from a tight angle.

With Bandile Shandu withdrawn and Ntsako Makhubela introduced, Pirates were out firing through Fortune Makaringe’s snap shot and Kwame Peprah’s belter that worked Mothwa to a save.

Usuthu carved out a reply over ten minutes in the second stanza courtesy of De Jong’s close-range effort from a cutback on the left-side, but it was parried for a corner by the Buccaneers.

Hotto should’ve had the Buccaneers back ahead through a first-time finish in the area, but he was denied by Mothwa following a balanced closing quarter.

The frustrations continued for the Buccaneers as Peprah headed a looping delivery into the box over before the returning Thembinkosi Lorch snapped a delivery too, as it finished 1-1 in Durban.
