Covid-19 lockOUT | Chiefs, City clash called off

In farcical scenes, the DStv Premiership clash between Kaizer Chiefs and Cape Town City was called off after the home side failed to arrive at the venue with the Cape side locked out of FNB Stadium.

The Citizens confirmed that it had followed all the necessary matchday protocols as they honoured the fixture by arriving the required 90 minutes before kick-off.

Kaizer Chiefs though were a no-show with the stadium doors sensationally shut with the away side denied entry.

"Having followed all matchday procedures, Cape Town City FC was present at FNB Stadium for the start of the match at 18:00," a statement said on the CT City official Twitter account.

"Regrettably Chiefs did not arrive and the match officials called the game off at 18:15 in accordance with the rules of the game. A sad day for football."

Amakhosi documented two statements in first requesting a postponement of their December fixtures by the PSL. While also categorically stating that it would be unable to host Saturday's fixture due to a wave of positive Covid-19 cases.

The club announced that a minimum of 31 club personnel and staff had tested positive for Covid-19 that forced the closure of its Naturena training base.

Speaking ahead of the scheduled kick-off, CT City media officer Julian Bailey confirmed the club had followed all necessary guidelines.

"The rules of the league state that only the PSL can postpone a fixture," Bailey said to Newzroom Afrika. Kaizer Chiefs cannot announce that a fixture has been postponed. So for us, we have to follow procedure, that’s why we travelled the Johannesburg yesterday.

"That's why we are here at the stadium on time, 90 minutes before, as we are supposed to be.

"We met with the match commissioner and he explained the process to us, for us, it's all about following the processes.

"What we explained by the match commissioner is that we have to remain here until at least 15 minutes after the scheduled kick-off, so we’ll be here after 18:15. We’ve brought the whole team.

"We've handed in all the necessary documentation that goes to match commissioners and to the league before any match. We have not skipped any steps.

"The rest is up to the match commissioner and the match officials, they will submit all documentation, saying they have been here and we’ve been here, but the gates have been locked. The rest is really up to the officials."
