Links learning from Teko

Premiership

The former Platinum Stars winger joined the Citizens at the start of the season, having spent the first half of the year at Egyptian top-flight club Alassiouty FC.

With a plethora of talented wingers in the City squad, including speedster Craig Martin, Surprise Ralani, Riyaad Norodien and Allan Kateregga, Links has not yet established himself as a regular in the starting line-up, making three starts and five substitute appearances across the 10 games his club has played across all competitions this season.

His impact off the bench in previous encounters has been evident, with the youngster rewarded with a starting berth in City’s MTN8-winning final against SuperSport United over the weekend, a position the talented winger hopes he will now lock down.

"Every time I came on as a substitute, the coach [Benni McCarthy] would tell me, 'Boy, don't be scared, just play your own game',” he said. “He told me he would introduce me little by little, so now I'm looking forward to starting more games.

“I’m happy because I’m playing – even back in Egypt I was playing. I’m getting there, I just need more game-time, and just need to work harder so I can play more games.”

The 20-year-old, who celebrates his birthday today, insists he is at the right club, who he chose to join over other interested PSL teams upon his return to South Africa from Egypt.

“I think I’m definitely at the right club, with one of the best coaches,” he said. “Benni knows all the players, so that’s why I chose Cape Town City over other teams.”

Aiding in his growth process is Modise, who Links says has helped him immensely in training as he seeks to learn as much as possible from the experienced midfielder.

“Teko is one of the players who is always encouraging me and telling me what to do,” Links said. “If he sees something is wrong, he always comes to me and tells me how to improve my game.”

City will look to avoid a post-cup success hangover ahead of tonight’s clash against Bidvest Wits at Cape Town Stadium.

Kick-off is set for 19h30, with tickets for this clash set at just R10.
