Benni doubtful for Pirates clash

McCarthy did not accompany his team when they left Cape Town Airport on Monday for their away fixture at the Orlando Stadium.

According to Comitis, McCarthy’s wife Stacey is ill and hinted that Bafana Bafana's all-time record goal scorer could well miss the league tie against his former club.

“Benni’s wife is not well,” Comitis told this website.

“She has been admitted to hospital with a collapsed lung.

“We understand his situation and our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”

Assistant coach Vasili Manousakis could step into the breach should McCarthy be unavailable.

The Citizens, who have dropped to 12th position on the log, will be looking to bounce back from their 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Pirates’ Soweto neighbours Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday in the Mother City.

McCarthy scored 13 goals in 39 matches for the Sea Robbers during two seasons spent at Mayfair before he retired in 2013.
