PSL announce new domestic cup competition

PSL chairman Irvin Khoza has announced the re-introduction and rebranding of a popular domestic cup competition to South African football.

The 2023/24 season will see the introduction of the new Carling Knockout Cup which will replace the former version of the competition, the Telkom Knockout competition, which last took place in 2019.

"I'm highly elated and excited to answer the question, 'What are we doing with the Telkom Cup?' Today I am happy to announce a new sponsor and partner - a longstanding partner," Khoza said in a statement confirming Carling Black Label as the new sponsor for the knockout competition.

"There is a gap in our calendar. Remember, the Telkom used to be played between October and December so there was a gap in that space. We tried to find a balance, and find space to accomodate this partnership [around other calendar considerations].

"...The name of the competition will be the Carling Knockout Cup, but in the element of that sponsorship will be the Carling 11, which will be played not fare from the date of October / November.

"We have discovered that in December time, people need more football, so we have decided that that element will be played on the 16th of December. We have agreed that there will be a bit of innovation that will go with it..."

Khoza confirmed that this final fixture will see the winner of the Carling Knockout Cup face a Carling XI that will feature players from the other 15 teams, broken up into six senior players and five reserve team players, as voted for by the fans.
