Petersen talks competition for Chiefs' No.1 spot

New Kaizer Chiefs signing Brandon Petersen is feeling motivated by the fierce competition he faces to earn the No. 1 spot at Naturena.

Petersen joined the Amakhosi as a free agent last month and has already impressed after his penalty heroics against Orlando Pirates in the Carling Black Label Cup.

The 26-year-old will also be aiming to stake a claim as first-choice for the 2021/22 campaign, which is set to get under way with the MTN 8 quarter-finals this weekend.

The former Bidvest Wits shot-stopper is one of five goalkeepers currently vying for a starting berth alongside captain Itumeleng Khune, Daniel Akpeyi, Bruce Bvuma and youngster Karabo Molefe.

Petersen, though, is using the fierce competition as motivation to improve his level of performance in a bid to make the jersey his own.

"Having that camaraderie between the goalkeepers and seeing the way they work together and push one another, for me, it was an eye-opener," he told the club's media team. "It is encouraging me to work hard.

"We saw in the CAF Champions League, with the changes that Chiefs had with the goalkeepers, they put one in and he performs. That is something that makes me smile...

"Because there is always me pushing someone else and someone pushing me, it will help. In the first training session the guys made me feel at home and for me, it has been a blast."

The Glamour Boys face reigning DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns in an MTN8 quarter-final on Sunday.

Kick-off is at 15:00.
