Vilakazi attracts Belgian interest

The Bidvest Wits midfielder, who was named PSL Player of the Season, PSL Players' Player of the Season and Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament at the end of the last campaign, is adamant that he only wants a move to Europe and will turn down advances from the Gauteng 'Big Three'.

And he may get his wish with agent Mike Makaab telling that a side in Belgium have made inquiries about the 24-year-old Wits captain.

“There is real interest from Belgium, so we are hopeful that something can be done,” Makaab said. “He wants to play in Europe, that is his ambition, and I think that it is great that a young South African player takes that stance when big local clubs come knocking.”

Makaab reveals that Vilakazi may yet move to Danish side Brondby, who will compete in the UEFA Europa League next season, after spending a few days there during the past season, but is not happy to send him for another trial.

“I am not keen for him to go back there just so they can have another look, to be honest,” Makaab says. “He has been there once and they have had ample opportunities to look at him play for Wits, so I am not sure it is the best thing for him to go on another trial. But the Brondby option is still alive and kicking.”

Wits have a partnership with Brondby that has already seen one of their development players, Lebogang Phiri, move to Denmark and play in the first team at the club.

Vilakazi made 35 appearances for Wits in all competitions last season, scoring 13 goals, and helped them to the final of the Nedbank Cup. He also made his Bafana Bafana debut against Morocco last October.
