Mashaba monitoring Phiri

Phiri, 19, is in his third season with the Danish Superliga outfit, and has scored once in one start and eight substitute outings this campaign.

The Alexander-born player is a product of Bidvest Wits' youth structures.

“Well Like I have mentioned in the past, there is currently a very large pool of players under my radar who are playing their trades in Europe and in the country, who are doing well and we are looking at,” Mashaba tells

“And just like every other footballer that can play football in this country, everyone  is in line to receive the call-up when we feel he is performing well at his club we will than call him up and have a look at him.

“But then again, it is important for one to note that, I select players who are under my radar also.

“Because, say now I call up the player in question, and the many others that I’ve been questioned for not including in recent squads, than I lose the game. You [the media] will be the first to come back and complain.

“Everybody has to understand that I select the team that I feel can get the job done, but I must not be made to feel like I’m pushed to select certain players.

“But we are looking at him [Phiri] and we are well aware that he is highly favored by his age to be considered for the junior national teams as well.”

Phiri came on in the 76th minute as Brondby beat Aalborg 2-1 on Sunday.
