Bafana coach explains Petersen inclusion

Bafana Bafana goalkeeper coach Grant Johnson has detailed the decision-making process behind the recent call-up of in-form Kaizer Chiefs shot-stopper Brandon Petersen.

Petersen, who has been outstanding for Chiefs recently, has been named in Hugo Broos' preliminary 29-man squad for the March international friendlies against Guinea and world champions France.

"Obviously with the local goalkeepers there's not a lot of them, so we've got to go with who is playing currently and who is performing currently," Johnson tells KickOff.

"So he's been playing really well, and we are happy with his performance.

"So basically we watched him over the weekend and he had a good game, so there are no issues with that [current form].

"I think he's got the opportunity, the improvement that I've seen, his distribution has got a lot better and just his general confidence is good.

"He looks fit, he looks sharp, and when you are assessing a goalkeeper those are the things that you look for.

"We need three goalkeepers in the national team so they can all challenge each other, by pushing for that number 1 jersey. Because if the position automatically becomes rudimentary then it's a problem.

"There should be no automatic choices in the national team.

"Even Ronwen needs to be pushed, we need to show that there are other goalkeepers who can challenge him for the position."
