The tournament, hosted by CSUNS Holdings in partnership with the City of Cape Town, will feature four Premier Soccer League sides as Mamelodi Sundowns, Ajax Cape Town, Bidvest Wits and Chippa United battle it out for pre-season glory in preparation for the upcoming League season.
“It is a great opportunity for us as CSUNS Holdings to give local football fans an event worthy enough to launch the PSL season,” said CSUNS Holdings director China Mpololo.
“Cape Town has been denied the status it deserves in supporting local football and we want to showcase that local football supporters are as patriotic to the local game as any other football supporter in the country.
“We have secured the top local teams of the 2013/14 season by bringing the defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns and their runners-up Bidvest Wits [sic] to challenge Cape Town’s two premier teams.”
The tournament will be hosted by Cape Town’s Athlone Stadium over two days, with the first two fixtures kicking off on Friday, 25 July and the final scheduled for Sunday, 27 July.
In an attempt to encourage more attacking football, a new points system for the Challenge has been introduced.
Over and above the regular three points for a win and one point for a draw, a point will be awarded for each goal scored in the tournament, as the two teams that collect the most points face-off in Sunday’s final.
Tickets for the Cape Town Soccer Challenge are available at Computicket.
