“It’s great to be back… Cape Town is home and I’m enjoying myself. The players have been good to me and the coach (Roger de Sa) as well. I’m grateful for this opportunity,” says Mayambela, who recently joined Ajax after being released by SuperSport United late last season.
The former Bucs maestro will be looking to showcase the skills that earned him the nickname ‘Professor’, but maintains the team's success is his priority.
“We playing against Pirates and I believe the game is not about me. The game is about the team and doing well for the team. Even if I play or even if I don’t play… I will always put Ajax first. So for now my focus is doing well for Ajax and becoming a better person and a better player for Ajax.”
Mayambela hopes his arrival at Ikamva and that of fellow winger Lebohang 'Cheeseboy' Mokoena can extend the club's fanbase.
“We all know that people from the townships always see Ajax as a team not for them. So at least now with the signing of me and Cheeseboy it will change that perception of Ajax and people will come to the games hopefully… come and support in numbers even if we play against small teams,” adds Mayambela.
The Urban Warriors will host Pirates in an Absa Premiership tie at Cape Town Stadium (19h30 kick-off).
